Mr. Gorgui Sow, who has worked for ANCEFA as Regional Coordinator since 2001, has retired.

According to the Chairperson of the Board of ANCEFA, Pastor Reinaldo Jorge Sive, it was very hard to accept Mr. Sow’s retirement during the Board meeting held in Maputo from 6 to 8 February. Speaking at a special diner organised in honour of Mr Sow on 22nd March 2013 in Dakar, Pastor Sive said that the departure of Mr Sow, left a big gap to be filled. He said ANCEFA membership will remember him for his dynamic leadership which saw ANCEFA achieve a lot of things in the last decade. During his tenure as Regional Coordinator, the membership of ANCEFA rose from 19 founding national coalitions to 35 coalitions. Other achievements during this period included increased capacity building of national coalitions in policy analysis, budget tracking, and advocacy for EFA as well as expansion of ANCEFA programmes and projects.

As a result of the work of ANCEFA, civil society organisations from various countries in Africa have been undertaking initiatives that have seen positive changes including increased funding for education, improvements in pupil enrolment, teacher training, as well as enhanced accountability and transparency I the education sector. In his farewell speech, Mr Sow thanked ANCEFA for giving him the opportunity to lead ANCEFA, which he termed a home grown civil society network. As ANCEFA looks towards recruiting Mr. Sow’s replacement, the Board has appointed Mr .Limbani Eliya Nsapato, Policy and Advocacy Manager based in Lusaka as Interim Regional Coordinator.
