Kenya - Stakeholders hold EFA National Conference

The third civil society led national conference on Education for All (EFA) was held in Nairobi, from 24 to 26 May 2011. Such conferences have been held in Kenya since 2009 at the initiative of Elimu Yetu Coalition. Attended by the entire membership of the coalition, the conference aims at taking stock, consolidating gains, securing new space and setting reform agenda for education sector in Kenya.

According to Jannet Muthoni, ANCEFA Program officer based in Nairobi, the theme of the conference this year was ‘’Towards Progressive Realization of the Right to Basic Education in Kenya’’ .

She says, during the conference participants took stoke of progress made since August 2010 towards realization of the Right to basic education as contained in the new Constitution of Kenya (2010).

The activists also reached consensus and validated policy and curriculum reform package to be presented to Moe Task force on the Re-alignment of Education Sector to the New Constitution.

“Another outcome of the conference was status review of the forgotten goals or aspects of EFA (particularly goals 3 and 4), including alternative basic education opportunities (ABEO) and propose new innovations & strategies for accelerating the race towards 2015” Muthoni adds.

Participants also came up with a strategic framework for increasing demand for social accountability, combating corruption and improving service delivery in education sector with focus at school, county and national levels.

Among the dignitaries that addressed the conference was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Prof. James Ole Kiyiapi.
